Skiing is a popular winter activity, but it raises an important question. What do you do with your phone? Sure, you could leave it behind, but most people prefer to keep their phone with them for several reasons. Skiing has some inherent risks, and having a phone to call for help is reassuring, but sometimes you just want to snap a selfie on the slopes. So, how do you keep your phone safe while you are skiing? Here are five tips to keep your phone safe on the slopes.
When you are skiing, you are battling against the cold and the snow, which is ultimately water. A ugo™ Phone 2.0 waterproof phone pouch offers the perfect protection because it is fully waterproof and protects the cold and snow. Cold also encourages condensation. A waterproof case protects your phone from precipitation and moisture in the air that could slip into your phone undetected.
The ugo™ Phone 2.0 seals the air inside the case while sealing water out; this seal and a layer of insulation help keep your phone warm and protected. Extreme temperatures can affect the way your phone works and even damage it. Cold temperatures will quickly drain your battery, and no one wants a dead phone on the slopes. It can also damage your screen if it reaches below freezing. The ugo case has a layer of insulation to further protect your phone from cold temperatures.
You'll also need to secure your phone before you start skiing. You'll be moving fast and potentially experience bumps. If your phone isn't properly secured, it could bounce right out of your pocket. Worst of all, you may not notice until you reach the bottom of the hill.
There are a few ways to secure your phone. You can zip it into your jacket. It's recommended to place it into the mid-layer and zip the pocket completely. To fully close, you will have to give a final tug and feel it pop into the secure spot, and you will feel it’s fully sealed. Don't put it in your pants pocket. If you take a fall, you are most likely to land on your rear. If your weight lands on your phone, you'll probably need a new one.
You can also secure it with your ugo case. It has a crossbody strap and hooks so you can quickly secure your phone. For the ultimate in secure hold, use the Hypalon anchors. If you don't have a place to secure the anchor on your jacket, use a lanyard or chain to secure it to your belt loop, with enough slack so that you can put it in a breast pocket on your jacket.
Apple has suggested that your phone shouldn't be exposed to temperatures below 32 degrees. Exposing it to the cold, even for small increments of time, can cause the phone to get cold and warm again. This expanding and contracting isn't good for your device. If you've ever been in a situation where you've gone from a heated area to bitter cold and back again, you can imagine how this feels to your phone.
A hands-free device is a great way to keep your phone safe and warm. It allows you to use your phone while leaving it in a secure place on your body, so it's not directly exposed to the elements. If you do need to bring your phone out, keep it in the ugo pouch. Your phone is fully functional inside the pouch, and you still have the temperature and water protection it offers. The case also allows you to use a Bluetooth device without interference.
If your phone is properly secured, you shouldn't lose it. However, accidents still happen. It's a good idea to keep the app, find my phone enabled while traveling, and especially when skiing. Some skiers turn the phone to vibrate or put it in airplane mode to avoid distractions, so calling it isn't always an option if you lose it on the slopes.
You should always have a back-up plan when you are skiing. If you've followed these tips, your phone should be safe and sound. However, if you have friends on the slopes, what happens if their phone goes out? Have a designated meeting time and place just in case you can't get into contact with your ski buddies. This is for safety as well as convenience. You'll know quickly if someone isn't there when they should be, rather than waiting a few more hours or wondering if they are at the cabin while you are at the lodge.
